Hello Trine,
Thank you for your comment on my painting. We have very similar styles and choices of color. I have not ran into that before.
I would like to be your friend.

Trine, I am so sorry about your friend. The sad thing here is that even though there are Medicare for old people and Medicaid for the poor, not everyone who is poor qualifies and not all procedures are covered, even with the insured. Some states are basically overwhelmed by the expense, and some do better than others at funding care for kids, but Bush has pretty much destroyed our safety net.
A few years ago, when he allowed corporations to bring in profits at a 5% tax rate from overseas, he simultaneously notified pediatricians that they did not have to treat sick children who were not already enrolled in Medicaid. In effect he was telling them that if they did treat these poor children they would not be reimbursed by the government. This was a complete switch from before, when if a child was sick, his parents could enroll him after the fact.
Even when people can go to the doctor, if the antibiotic the doctor prescribes is $150 and they just paid $150 to see the doctor, they cannot afford the medicine. Of course, everyone has a problem with the co-payments and the cost of health insurance. At one point before my husband went on Medicare, we paid $2200 US for insurance that only covered us if we were sick and non of the well-care, preventative things we should do.
Well, I have to sign off - my husband is getting a minor surgery, but will write soon.

Hi Trine, I posted this answer to your comment, but thought you might want a direct answer.:)
Trine, I have no friends who would ever consider voting for Sarah Palin, but the religious evangelicals in this country are as fanatical as any other extreme fundamentalists. Fortunately, I do believe that Obama will win - in spite of the latest bottom-scraping campaign tactics of John McCain and Sarah Palin. I agree, our president affects so much globally that it really is a world problem if we elect McCain and Palin.
On your question about insurance and lack of access to medical care, the issue becomes critical for people who are not insured because they don't get examined. Therefore, if they are developing heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or even cancer, they generally do not know it. Once a person is diagnosed there can be charitable help or the individual states or counties may have to treat someone with life-threatening problems, but diagnosis becomes improbable or even impossible for someone without insurance as until a person has very bad symptoms or goes to the emergency room with them, how do they even know they are sick?
It used to be that every doctor had his non-paying patients, or they would barter something, but life here has changed and many doctors will not treat patients without insurance because they don't want to have to try to collect from them. Even people with medicare (65 and up), which is funded by the government, find many doctors do not want to treat them as they feel the reimbursement isn't high enough.
As you can see, it is a complex problem here in the US, even though for those who can pay or have good insurance, it is a very good medical care system. The poor end up with much lower life expectancies than the general population, which seems immoral if not criminal to me.

HELLOOOOOO!
I'm not bragging. . .Well, yes I am. I believe I have the most eclectic Group--outofourshells--and People connections than any grouping on Gather.
It has been my pleasure to find and invite new people to mingle with those who have been with me for a while. It is my wish for you to use these groupings to your advantage. If you have a group of your own, please think of outofourshells as a second home. If you belong to other groups, please think of outofourshells when you publish. Anyone is welcome to join as long as they agree with the Group's
description--which is mainly to show respect and to remember arguing is not the same as fighting. It is more akin to debating.
I have tried to attract as diverse a population as possible. I want our group and connections to to educate--as well as--learn from each other.
Thank you for your joining up and I look forward to your offerings!
Sincerely,
Nyota
P.S. I am sending this article to all of the Groups with which I am connected. I don't want to miss anyone ([;p)] !
